Stanmore Reading Festival

An amazing time was had by the whole school this week during our annual Reading Festival. Activities were based on the story of Arthur and the Sword in The Stone and included role on the wall helicopter stories and making spells and potions. We even had our own sword and Mrs Taylor wowed the children by pulling it clean from the stone! The day was rounded off with a live demonstration of jousting in full armour by some professional knights.

Thanks to Mr Thomas for his brilliant story telling and Mrs Jones for her excellent organisation. As you can see from the pictures the children thoroughly enjoyed the activities and we can’t wait until next year!

Stanmore children and their trips!

AI trip

On Tuesday 30 children from Year 5 and 6 took part in an Artificial Intelligence day at Winchester College. The children explored the uses of AI in the modern world and learnt all about how AI is programmed, how it learns and all of the moral and ethical implication associated with it. The day finished with a competition to design a new AI that would solve a problem that would benefit mankind and all the ideas were incredible. Well done everyone for a great day; we can’t wait to see if any of your ideas come to fruition.

Building work

As you may have noticed the building work is well and truly underway at Stanmore Primary School. The windows are looking great and ground work has begun on the new extension. We thought it may be helpful to show you the drawings of the finished building to give you a clear idea of what our fabulous school is going to look like. It should be a fantastic addition to our school.

Grow a Pound week

Grow a Pound

This week year 5 and 6 became entrepreneurs and created their own business’. After getting into groups the children bought in a pound each and devised their own products to sell. They needed to work out the cost of all the resources, market their ideas and work out the profit they may make. The final steps were to make their product and then set up their stall.

The culmination of this event was the chance for all the other year groups to come and purchase the range of goods on offer. These included fidget toys, cupcakes, lemonade and bracelets. The three yr 5 6 classes were fantastic all week and showed themselves to be excellent potential businessmen and woman as they raised a grand total of £172. The children will be voting on the charity they want to choose to donate the profits to, with a little left over as a treat for the classes. Well done Year 5 and 6!

Jubilee Celebrations

Jubilee Breakfast

Parents and children dressed in Tiaras or Diamonds to attend the Jubilee Breakfast at school. everyone looked fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed their bacon or sausage sandwiches. Thanks to everyone who bought tickets and to the kitchen staff for their early start.

Jubilee Lunch

Children gathered on the school field this lunchtime in house groups to celebrate the Queen’s amazing 70 year reign. We all enjoyed delicious cucumber and coronation chicken sandwiches and the whole school looked amazing in their red, white and blue. Thanks again to Mandy and the kitchen staff and to Mr Foard for helping sort all the tables.

Cricket

The school Cricket competed in a tournament this week at St Cross Cricket Ground. We were up against stiff competition and even though it was our first ever match we still managed to win one of our games. Staff were really proud of how the children behaved; they managed to combine a competitive edge with a great attitude (particularly with the heavy rain showers)..

Year 3 and 4

Yesterday we went on our amazing walk up St Catherine’s Hill! We were relieved that the weather was pleasant. We were also really pleased by how so many of you made it up all of the 331 steps to get to the top! Thank goodness we had some tasty snacks in our picnic bags to enjoy when we got there!

It was great that so many of you could join us!

Super Science at Stanmore

Year 5 and 6

This week in science we explored filtering and dissolving; conducting our own experiments with mixtures and solutions. The children showed their understanding of a fair test and looked at different variables. Things did get a little messy…..

Year 3 and 4

This half term, the children in Year 3 and 4 are learning about developing shades, tones and tints in their painting. They are learning to mix secondary and tertiary colours and develop them further by adding black and white paints. They will be using these skills to create a monochromatic painting of an image inspired by the South Downs artist, Mark Greco.

SATS are over!

Year 6

A huge well done for our yr6 cohort this week completing all their SATS test. We were all so impressed with their mature attitude and their resilience throughout the week. Thanks so much to the kitchen as well for the delicious breakfasts. The children celebrated on Friday afternoon with a visit from our local ice cream van. and luckily the sun appeared just in time. Thank you to the FoS for their support.

Year 5 and 6

Year 5 and 6 have been expert scientists this week investigating mixtures and solutions and how to separate them. The children then tested their filtering systems outside, using a bucket of muddy water, to investigate which materials helped to sieve out the dirt and purified the water. We all decided we still wouldn’t drink the ‘clean’ water!

Enjoying the sunshine

Year 2

This week we have carried on exploring plants and in our science looked at the difference between wild and garden plants. We went on a hunt around the school to see what we could find and we're surprised by the amount of plant life we have around our school site. We found lots of wild flowers including eyebright and speedwell, plants hidden in the grass, and also some wild strawberries. We are hoping for some strawberries to grow from them. The children then came back to class and dissected a flower to help identify all the different parts and then wrote what those parts are for.

Year 5 and 6

YR 6 took their Maths revision outside today and enjoyed the sunshine! Year 5 and 6 also enjoyed music lessons this week, playing the double harmonic scale which features in Arabic music. We played the notes: C Db E F G Ab B C.
