Athletics

This week 12 children from year 5 and 6 represented the school at Kings and took part in a range of different athletic activities. These included the javelin and the triple jump! They were a credit to the school and Mrs Horkan was very impressed with their enthusiasm.

Year 3 and 4 Egyptian day

Egyptian day was a great success!

We learned how to use hieroglyphics, found out about the Egyptian number system and mummified tomatoes! Later on, we made our own shabtis- servants to look after us in the afterlife!

Year 5 and 6

In Science this week the children have been learning about the function of blood in blood and the different components it is made from. To help them understand, the children made their own blood using cheerios (red blood cells), orange water (plasma), white marshmallows (white blood cells) and tiny pom poms (platelets). It was very messy but lots of fun and it helped us all remember the different parts.

Year 5/6 also accessed Google Legends to learn all about being safe on the internet. Through quizzes and games, we were able to understand the importance of being safe on the internet.

Pirates Ahoy!

Year 2

This week some of the children in Rowan class had a visit from a pirate. This links to a book we are looking at in writing called the pirates next door. The children planned questions for the pirate, interviewed the pirate and then wrote notes on the answers he gave.

Year 3 and 4

In history this week, Birch Class have been discussing who built the pyramids. They talked about different statements and then worked together as a group to sort them in a Diamond 9 - who built the pyramids, who didn't build the pyramids and who might have built the pyramids.

Subtraction surprise!

This week we practised our addition and subtraction by taking part in an nRich challenge called “Subtraction Surprise!” Luckily, Sycamore class were suitably surprised by the outcome!

Year 5 and 6

This week in Science the children have been learning about the heart; it’s purpose, how it works and how to keep it healthy. Some children made their own working model using bottles and red food dye, while others created two page spreads to illustrate their understanding.

Science, Music and Whales

Year 2

We have had a busy week this week in year 2. We have learnt about the importance of brushing our teeth and what foods are good for our teeth and which ones are not so good. We have continued with our longitudinal science study looking at the effect of the seasons on trees. While doing this we learnt about something that you can buy from the shop that is made from tree sap, see if your children remember what it is. In maths we have looked at mass and the children have been comparing, ordering and measuring weight.

Year 3 and 4

Music and science

We are studying sound in science, learning about how sound is caused by vibrations. This week we were making musical instruments in music lessons too. Our science investigation this week was focused on pitch - how to create different pitches and what instrument you could make to make a higher pitched sound.

Year 5 and 6

This week the children have been completing their final piece for their work on ‘The Whale’. They planned and drafted their own Whale encyclopedia pages and then completed the finished piece - they look amazing.

Elm class had an exciting letter this week from HHJ Angela Morris, the Resident Judge of Winchester and Salisbury Combined Courts. The classes have been invited to go to an actual courtroom and ask questions about what happens there. This is a great response to all the work the children did on their Topic last term - Does Justice always Whirl in Equal Measure.

Art and Encyclopedias

Year 1

This week KS1 have discovered the Pico Eagle! We learned how to safely play on the equipment and even our teachers had a go!

In KS1 art club, we revisited our knowledge about Arctic animals and created an Arctic scene using oil pastels!

Year 2

In art the children have planned out their own treasure islands and looked at the sculptor Kapoor to give inspiration for their own sculptures on their islands. This afternoon they used mod rock and some junk modelling to make the base of their islands.

Year 5/6

This week we are now coming to the end of our wonderful text, The Whale.

To end this writing journey, we are going to be planning and drafting an encyclopaedia entry based on a creature that lives in water.

Using a range of encyclopaedias, we became feature spotters and searched for the most effective ones.

Year 3 and 4

The Ashmolean Museum comes to Stanmore Primary School!

As a hook for our Ancient Egyptian topic, children in Year 3 and 4 were treated to a live virtual tour of the wonderful Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, which is the setting form some incredible Egyptian artefacts. One of the museum curators shared some of these amazing objects with the children, as well as offering them a tantalising glimpse into this ancient civilisation. What a way to start the new year!

As well as this visit the children in yr 3/4 had a fantastic afternoon exploring sound and the vibrations it causes. There were some excellent observations made and we were all really impressed by the scientific vocabulary that was used.

Year 5 and 6

This week in 5/6, we have started a new text in our English lessons, The Whale- a stunning black and white wordless picture book.

We have had a busy week starting of by comparing varying picture books; looking at the genre of our new text; creating a timeline of events; adding our own language to certain images and using drama to bring the story to life.

Christingles and Carols

Christingles

The whole school celebrated Christmas this week by making their own Christingle and watching a church from christchurch. We learn how the red ribbon shows God's love for the world and the blood of Jesus and the sweets/dried fruit represent God's creations.

Carols in the Courtyard

The whole school took part in Carols in the Courtyard this week and sang their hearts out! Families were treated to renditions of some lovely songs and even a performance of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer in sign language.

Well done in particular to the amazing house captains who were incredibly brave singing their Christmas Rap in front of all the families. Thanks you to everyone who attended.

Christmas Tree

Well done to all the year group for their fantastic Christmas tree display this year. The children loved making decorations and it made the school look really festive. Thank you to the Adeney for their generous donation.

Year 5 and 6

Using copper tape, batteries, and LED's Year 5 and 6 created simple circuits as part of our DT work. We were able to design images that lit up, and board games too.

In Aspen class the children watched some Christmas adverts and began to think about those older people in our society that may be on their own for Christmas. The children decided to write letters and make cards for the residents of a local Home and the staff and residents were delighted with their efforts.

Open Again

We are delighted to let you know that our pipes have been fixed and we are able to open to all children tomorrow.

The school day will run as usual and please remember it is Christmas jumper and Christmas dinner.

URGENT NEWS

Monday 13th December

Unfortunately, we have taken the difficult decision to close the school today Monday 13th December. This is because of a burst water pipe within the school walls that now needs to be excavated and investigated. During this time, there will be no water supply.  As a result, we are unable to meet health and safety guidelines relating to health and hygiene.

Work will be on Google Classroom with a class check in for all pupils at 1pm today.

Today’s Nativity will go ahead at Level 10 Church at 2pm.  Please bring children to Level 10 at 1.45pm.

The Year 5 football will be cancelled.

We will notify parents about plans for tomorrow via the website, text and email.

Please arrange to collect your children as soon as possible. Please collect from your child’s classroom, where the class teachers will sign your child out.

Minstead and Music

Minstead

Year 4 and 5 had their residential at Minstead Study this Week and after a rainy start, the sun shone and there were smiles a plenty. The children had a fantastic time and learnt all about wildlife in the New Forest as well as looking at ways that we can help save the planet.

Year 2

We have had a great week this week. We have explored materials and their properties in science by trying to make a tent for teddy. The children set up their own experiment and tested it, they then collected their results and evaluated which material was best.

We also had our Listen 2 me Samba music performance which was an excellent end to the term. The children sang and drummed along to some traditional African songs. There was some African dancing and at the end even the adults got involved. We are so grateful for the Hampshire listen 2 me service and look forward to learning recorders in the new term.

Year 5 and 6

In Year 5 and 6 the children have been using a runway collaborative task to show all they have learnt about living in a diverse society; the range of factors that contribute to a person’s identity; how individuality and personal qualities make up someone’s identity and how to challenge stereotypes and assumptions about others. The teachers have been so impressed with the level if maturity and understanding that the children have shown to the subject.

In maths we had to recall our shape knowledge when sorting both 2D and 3D shapes into varying criteria's. Some of us used Venn diagrams and Carroll diagrams to sort our shapes. Our criteria's included: varying angles; parallel and perpendicular lines and the amount of vertices shapes had.
